The truck is loaded, the boxes are stacked, and the team leader hands you the invoice. How much do you pay, when, and by what means? These three questions determine the peace of mind of your move as much as the choice of the service provider itself.

Moving quotes and payment terms: what the law requires

Before discussing payment, we need to talk about the document that governs it. In France, written quotes are legally required for a move, regardless of the amount. This quote must specify the payment terms: amount of any deposit, schedule, and accepted payment methods.

A mover who refuses to provide a detailed quote or who is vague about payment terms is subject to sanctions for unfair commercial practices. For you, this is a concrete warning sign. If the provider dodges the payment question in writing, move on.

When the quote is signed remotely (by email, electronic signature, or via an online platform), you benefit from a 14-day withdrawal period. This period starts from the signature, not from the move.

Specifically, if you sign a quote online three weeks before the big day, you can still cancel without fees for two weeks. This legal lever protects against commitments made under pressure, especially when a salesperson pushes to sign quickly to “secure a date.”

Deposit, balance, and payment timing: the concrete steps

The payment for a move is generally divided into two parts. Understanding this sequence avoids most disputes.

The deposit upon signing the quote

The majority of moving companies require a deposit upon validation of the quote. This amount varies, but it serves to confirm the reservation and engage both parties. The deposit must be clearly stated in the quote, with its exact amount and the conditions for reimbursement in case of cancellation.

Did you receive a quote that mentions a “deposit” without specifying whether it is refundable or not? Request written clarification before paying anything. In case of a dispute, only the signed document is valid.

The balance after delivery, not before

The remaining amount is settled once the move is completed, that is to say, after the complete delivery of your belongings to the new home. Paying the full amount before the truck is unloaded deprives you of any leverage in case of damage, loss, or delay.

The bill of lading (the document you sign upon arrival) states the condition of the delivered goods. If you notice a damaged piece of furniture or a missing box, you must note it on this document before paying the balance. Once payment is made without reservation, making a claim becomes significantly more complicated.

Accepted payment methods by movers: check, bank transfer, or cash

The payment method is not a logistical detail. It determines your ability to contest a charge in case of a problem.

  • The bank transfer leaves a time-stamped trace and allows for precise tracking. It is the safest method for large amounts, but it does not allow for opposition once executed.
  • The check offers a cashing delay that can serve as a buffer. In case of a quickly identified dispute, an opposition remains possible (under strict conditions).
  • Cash leaves no exploitable trace in case of a dispute. Beyond the legal limit, cash payments are actually prohibited between a professional and a private individual.
  • Payment by credit card, when offered, provides traceability comparable to a bank transfer, with the added possibility of initiating a chargeback procedure with your bank if the service was not rendered.

Whatever method you choose, always request a receipt or a paid invoice. A mover who hesitates to provide proof of payment poses a transparency issue, not a paperwork one.

Moving scams and unexpected costs: traps to watch out for

Financial disputes with a mover often follow the same pattern. The initial quote shows an attractive price, then on the big day, additional fees appear: difficult access, underestimated volume, extra charges for moving equipment.

Three checks can help limit these surprises:

  • Check that the quote specifies the exact estimated volume in cubic meters. A quote without a precise volume leaves the door open for a reassessment on the loading day.
  • Ask if the moving fees (floors without an elevator, distance between the truck and the front door) are included or charged extra. This line is part of the most common additional costs.
  • Check the clause regarding delivery times. A move with intermediate storage can generate unanticipated storage fees if the new home is not available on the scheduled date.

In case of disagreement on moving day, do not succumb to the pressure to immediately pay an unplanned extra charge. Note the reservations on the bill of lading, take photos, and only pay the amount agreed upon in writing.

Bill of lading and reservations: protecting your recourse after the move

The bill of lading is the document that the mover asks you to sign upon delivery. It certifies that the goods have been handed over and in what condition. This is your main legal lever in case of damage.

Take the time to check your belongings before signing. If an item is broken, scratched, or missing, write the reservation directly on the document, with a precise description (“glass coffee table cracked on the top,” not just “damage”). You then have ten days to confirm your claim by registered letter.

Signing the bill of lading without reservation, then sending an email three days later to report damage, significantly reduces your chances of obtaining compensation. The timing of the observation is as important as the timing of the payment.
